Ohio. the youngest member of the Roman Catholic hierarchy in the United States. In 1930 he was named archbishop of Milwaukee and 10 years later became archbishop of Chicago. In December 1945 he was elevated to the College of Cardinals. Samuel Cardinal Stritch was a prince of the church who retained the manner of a simple parish priest. The son of an Irish immigrant who died when the cardinal was a boy. Samuel Stritch rose in church councils through extraordinary mental and spiritual gifts which were displayed from his boyhood. He was enormously popular in Chicago and was highly respected for his administrative energy and revered for his good works.
