There are other items which are set forth in the committee report for which appropriations were made for fiscal year 1958 and for which no requests were made in the present bill. With regard to the item for salaries and expenses of the Department of State. while it would appear that the committee has recommended an increase of but $1.536.500 over the amount appropriated for salaries and expenses in the current fiscal year. actually. the increase allowed the Department of State in the coming year is approximately $2.175.000. when certain nonrecurring items are taken into consideration. This increase is recommended to provide for such things as increased consular workload. implementation of the Immigration and Nationality Act amendments. and increased costs. The committee has specifically included in this bill the funds requested for opening 12 new consular and reporting posts. Last year the committee allowed funds for the opening of 10 new consular and reporting posts which were recommended to the committee at the time as being very urgent and necessaryand immediately necessary.
