The civilization of Europe no longer offered an expanding society for these young people. It appeared to many of them that the old life of Europe and Asia was so bound to the past that there was little room for innovation. Many of the immigrants gave up comfortable positions in Western Europe because they believed that the ancient homeland offered an opportunity to make productive and fruitful its desert and rocky hills. The farmers in Galilee along the Jordan. the Syrian and Lebanese borders are on the frontier of a new world. It is a world in which knowledge and science are battling the feudal tradition of the Middle East.
