Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850198761

Israel had a population of 2 million inhabitants. including about 1.800.000 Jews and 214.000 Arabs. No other country has grown so rapidly in an equal span of time. It was this vision that sustained the fighters on the borders during the intense combat of 1948. New immigrants continue to arrive at the rate of 80.000 a year. The Israeli Government must support. for a short period. the new immigrants. few of whom can even speak Hebrew. the language of the country. But more pressing. the Government must assimilate the exiles into the steadily expanding Israeli economy. The question remains. is the economy developing quickly enough to meet the demands of the rapidly growing state?
