For instance. in the course of a single generation1922 to 1948the Jewish population of Palestine had been increased almost tenfold. On the eve of Israels independence there were some 650.000 Jews in the country. and a good start for the new state. This was especially significant because the newly arriving immigrants were dedicated to the single cause of making Israel a new center of spiritual and cultural life and a haven for persecuted Jews throughout the world. Today there are more than 1.600.000 Jews in the new state. The 10th anniversary of the birth of Israel is certainly a great event in the lives of Jews around the world and also in the short but significant life of the new state.
