This is of course. only one of many great events in the history of Greece. One of the basic sources of our western culture is ancient Greece. Our philosophy. art. architecture. political ideas. and language owe much to the greatness of the ancient Greeks. It is against the background of these noble people that we must judge our present policies. I have in mind particularly our shamefully unfair immigration policy. The Greek quotas are discriminatory and inasmuch as Americans of Greek origin are known to be exemplary citizens these policies are unwise. This anniversary of Greek independence is an occasion for rededicating ourselves to continuing friendship with the Greek nation.
