The copper mines in the Negev are being developed with American equipment and technical assistance. Private American investment is evident in some industrial establishments In Haifa and Tel Aviv. Israel. however. is still operating under an unfavorable balance of trade. and will continue to need economic help for some time to come. Although production and exports are up. the sharp rise in immigration has put a great strain on Israels economy. The trade deficit is expected to be between $300 million and $350 million this year. Inflationary pressures are increasing and the cost of living is rising despite government measures to keep food and clothing within reach of the average worker.
