Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850065965

We will have. in fact. already lost that freedom. and will in time. feel the effect of the loss. I do not pretend to be a political prophet or seer. but it is not impossible that there will come a day when those who seek hardest to prevent the equal application of the law may have greatest need of such equality. Our history is full of examples where new immigrants faced discrimination because they were used to different ways. spoke other tongues. or appeared different physically. than did the old residents. Germans fleeing from war in their homeland. Irish escaping famine.
