Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850047759

The first was the Internal Security Act. passed over President Trumans veto in 1950. Its outstanding provision is the requirement that all Communistfront organizations register with the Government and face regulation. In 1954 Congress passed the Communist Control Act. which prohibits members of the party from seeking places on election ballots. and thus. for all practical purposes. outlaws the party. Similar provisions can be found in the McCarranWalter Immigration Act and the TaftHartley labor law. The executive branch of the Government also has taken actions designed to promote security. These actions have assumed the form of farflung loyaltysecurity programs and vigorous enforcement of antisubversive legislation.
