At the same time. the Jews of Poland are escaping Communist oppression in large numbers. Altogether this year. Israel will provide shelter and new homes for 100.000 Jewish refugees without regard to the staggering cost of such an effort. On this ninth anniversary. I wish for the people of Israel that there will be an end to the threats against their survival and that the bonds of friendship which they have with the United States will become ever stronger. I hope that in the interests of the free world. our Government will continue to help Israel in greater measure this year. because of the immigration burden that Israel has undertaken. I hope. too. that our Government will contribute to the establishment of new communications and other transport facilities between the Port of Elath and the Mediterranean coast. The wisdom of our insistence upon the independence of Israel has been fully confirmed and we have reaped benefits of many times our investment in that young nation.
