Speech #850047507

For instance. in the course of a single generation1922 to 1948the Jewish population of Palestine had been increased by almost tenfold. On the eve of Israels independence there were some 650.000 Jews in the country. and that was a good. auspicious beginning. a good start for the new small state. This was especially true because the newly arriving immigrants were dedicated to the single cause of making Israel a new center of spiritual and cultural life and a haven for persecuted Jews throughout the world. At the present time there are more than 1.600.000 Jews in Israel and the population is still increasing. A large majority of the immigrants are under 50 years of age. which means that the Israelis are a youthful people and possess youths energy and enthusiasm. Today Israel is a living. growing and powerful entity in the Middle East. It is a lively and dynamic state.
