Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850046060

Tous this was indicative of the freedom of opportunity. freedom of religious belief and worship. and the absence of discrimination of any kind. because of race. creed. or national origin in the Dominican Republic. We were invited to meet with Generalissimo Trujillo. In the course of our discussion. we mentioned the plight of the Egyptian refugees who are now seeking a haven from communism and Nasser terrorism. We were particularly concerned because President Eisenhower and Secretary of State Dulles have refused the same preference to the Egyptian refugees as was given to the Hungarians. Generalissimo Trujillo assured us that he would be happy to do today what he did in 1940. He said that the door of the Dominican Republic is open to all oppressed people. regardless of race. creed. or national origin and that 5.000 A3159 Jewish refugees can be admitted immediately. He further advised us that he is making available sufficient fertile land for all those who will come. Middle East Situation Serious
