Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850045886

The Senator is quite correct. I think millions of Americans and people throughout the free world are much disturbed over the fact that apparently there was nothing we could do at the peak of the Hungarian revolt. I should like to say to the Senate that it would seem to the junior Senator from Washington the admission of the refugees is the minimum we can do to encourage people behind the Iron Curtain to resist tyranny. If we do not make it possible for a minimum number of people to come to America should they fight their way to freedom. then there is virtually no hope that the people behind the Iron Curtain will muster the courage to resist Communist tyranny.
