Yet the importance of an active cultural output by writers and poets dedicated to national independence and democracy cannot be underestimated. From the authors pen can comeas at the time when our own land became a free nationthe words which will keep alive devotion to liberty. confidence in a common cause. and consciousness of a national destiny. Both those who are refugees and those still enslaved. whom these words will certainly sooner or later reach. will receive new inspiration and feel new pride in their country. The Soviet Union knows well the significance of a nations cultural life in keeping alive the spirit of resistance. A massive campaign has long been underway in the satellite countries to destroy independent culture and thus to produce a new generation unacquainted with its own cultural heritage and out of touch with any of the current writing and thinking of its democratic leaders in exile.
