A curious similarity exists between the situations in 1848 and that of last year. Like 1848 resolute strength proved fruitless. but as in 1848 once more the villain in a play for freedom is Russia. Between October 23. 1956. and January 1. 1957. it has been estimated that 155.000 refugees fled their homeland to escape the unbearable burden of oppression and communism. Hungary has given to Americaindeed to the free worlda renewed confidence in itself and a new recognition of the perfidy of communism. it has demonstrated that mere barbaric. naked force cannot stifle the indomitable will for the most basic desires of humanity and freedom. It is with a sincere sense of the accomplishment of their forefathers that I humbly add my voice to the memory of Hungary on this. their day of independence.
