Mr. President. I have listened with a great deal of interest to what has been said about the situation in the Middle East. In 1953 I visited there as a representative of the Refugee Subcommittee and the Immigration Subcommittee of the Senate. While there I studied a part of the background of the situation we are now discussing. I have heard a great deal of discussion about the wonderful. rich nations over there. Some of them are rich. Perhaps I should say that some of the rulers over there are rich. because they control all the income from the oil resourcesthe average citizen gets very little of it.
