Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850011054

This is in no way a political question which could in any sense separate Republicans and Democrats. We must do what we can to force a return to the elementary principles of justice and humapity in the Middle East. Every American is proud of the action of the United States in opening our doors to the refugees from political persecution in Hungary. This is consistent with our tradition. But we must treat other refugees with this same compassion which we so rightly exercised in the behalf of the Hungarian refugees from Soviet tyranny. Those who have been expelled from Egypt. and those who may be forced out in the future must also receive the same full measure of American understanding. American policy in the Middle East Is dangerously balanced on a high wire.
