Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850010905

It was created as a nation in the surge of hope and idealism that followed World War I. during the brief time that Lithuania occupied her rightful place in the family of free nations the cultural. economic. political. and social contributions of its people were outstanding. Today. as we commemorate this anniversary. there is no longer a Lithuania. Its flag has been destroyed. its national anthem made mute. More than a halfmillion Lithuanian men. women. and childrenonesixth of the total populationhave been deported to Soviet slavelabor camps or have died in prison or massacre. Visitors are barred from Lithuania. no one is allowed to leave the country. Yet. the little news that we manage to obtain from that land tells us that a resistance movement flourishes there. that the will for freedom remains invincible.
