Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850006878

But what is the nature of the threat to freedom and stability in this part of the world? There is first of all an incendiary political problem stemming from the bitter ArabIsraeli dispute. There is the related Arab refugee problem. and the unsettled question of the Suez Canal. From all indications. it is more likely that one of these trouble spots might erupt in a shooting war between one or more of the Arab States and the State of Israel than that the Russians will be so stupid as to launch a military attack in the Middle East. As a nation that has played a key role in the creation of the State of Israel. the only real democracy in the Middle East.
