Now. to my mind. a beginning signifies a foundation. a strong basis upon which to rest future hopes and accomplishments. In view of existent facts. to me the Presidents proposal represents only a parchment canopywith golden inscriptions of promiseswith no true foundation or props to keep it earthbound or stable. There can be no real peace in the world until the differences between Egypt and Israel are settled. until such problems as recognition of Israel by Egypt as a free state. resettlement of Arab refugees. reopening of the Suez Canal with the establishment of adequate safeguards for the interests of the users. are solved. The Presidents plan would leave these vital problems entirely up to the United Nations. Yet. at this point. there is a new deadlock between Egypt and Israel.
