Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850003403

The oppression and tyranny we are witnessing in the Ukraine and in other nations of Eastern Europe make it most urgent that we adopt a firm policy regarding our role in assisting these peoples. The Ukrainian Congress Committee of America has made some excellent suggestions to the State Department which I hope will be carried out. These include a full investigation and report on Communist oppression in captive nations and the liberalization of our immigration and nationality laws especially as they apply to the peoples of Eastern Europe. The President has stressed the importance of letting the people in captive nations know that we do not accept their captivity as a permanent status. It is important today that the people of the Uk:aine know of our heartfelt concern for their present subjugation and that we share with them the hope for their early return to the brotherhood of free nations.
