Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850002001

A nonlegal argument sometimes used. is that religious sentiment in a country such as Italy where the Roman Catholic Church is so strong (95 percent Roman Catholic with from onefourth to onehalf of the people also Communists) is that they are already "Christians" and that the churches of Christ have no right religiously to enter. Conversely. in America. a country with a predominant Protestant heritage. the door is open to all faiths to proselyte. Priest Ligutti. recently stated. according to the Chicago Daily News Foreign Service. in recruiting Italian Catholics to emigrate tO South Carolina. that there were not enough Catholics in the Carolinas. even less. in fact. on the average than there were in China. hence. he wanted healthy Italian wives to increase the number of Catholics in that area. Monsignor Ligutti. thus identified the good wife. Although religion and civil liberties are primarily internal problems of soverefgn governments. where the free practice of religion is proscribed. even if in expediency they are cynical enough to practice some tolerance under certain circumstances. when. the Godgiven. inalienable right of freedom of conscience is impaired or threatened by arbitrary police force. it does a great disservice to Christianity.
