Session #85 · 1957–59

Speech #850001092

President Woodrow Wilsori. Those present at this meeting were Americans whose forebears were citizens of once free countries of Europe. Indeed. many of them were new Americans and recent refugees from the oppression of Nazi and Communist totalitarianism. Their purpose in honoring this great man was not only to celebrate the birth of one who did so muc to establish the principles of freedom and equality among men and nations. nor was it only to commemorate the loss of freedom in the lands where Woodrow Wilson is long revered as one of the givers of liberty. Their purpose included recalling with sadness the grief and suffering of so many of our brothers in these conquered and dominated lands. and a rededication to liberation of the people there and of all others enslaved by the Communist monster.
