Session #84 · 1955–57

Speech #840235349

The fishermen on the Pacific coast and in other parts of the country have come to this country for the most part from those countries where fishing was traditional. such as Italy. Portugal. Yugoslavia. Spain. Norway. Sweden. and parts of England. On the west coast we add to that the Japanese. who are perhaps the greatest fishermen of all. We have cut off immigration and the source of fishermen naturally has dried up as we cut off that immigration. I notice that Senator PURTELL in his statement on this bill in the Senate calls attention to the fact that the average age of the fishermen in New England now is around 59. When these men originally went to sea they did so in sail. or the boats were propelled by oars.
