Those Presidential recommendations have fitted into a nationwide pattern of criticism by hundreds of great organizations representing every stratum of our society and all the major religious faiths. Many of these organizations have endorsed the pending amendment. which. as I have said. is identical with S. 1206. Particularly noteworthy among the organizations which have been demanding substantial modification of existing immigration and citizenship laws have been the CIO and the AFLnow the AFLCIOrepresenting 15 million working men and women throughout the country. Indeed. in my judgment. organizations representing the overwhelming majority of the American people today demand modification of present law.
