Session #84 · 1955–57

Speech #840190410

It was the idealism of America that captured the hearts and minds of Europeans who had long since had their fill of power politics. It is the vision of America as a land of the free and the land of opportunity that gives the captive peoples of Europe their only source of hope and strength. It was the torch of freedom. equality. and Justice which influenced the hearts of Asiatics and set up in their minds a glowing picture of the United .9tates as a brilliant sun illuminating a dark horizon. To give you an example of what I mean. let me make only a brief reference to the recent visit of President Sukarno. of Indonesia. to this country. As you may recall. he made a special pilgrimage to the home of Thomas Jefforson out of appreciation for the inspiration which Jeffersons life and ideas had given him during the many years of his struggle for the independence of Indonesia.
