Speech #840169988

They cannot always be sure of such favorable action as was so fortunately taken in this case. The problem is much more complex and reaches deeply into our entire American industrial economy. It is a matter .of policy. which will have to be decided. -if American industry is to be guarded .against the increasing threats of. sweatshop and coolie laborlow standards. low wages. long hours. poor working conditions and the other antisocial accompaniments of many competitive foreign industries. which are today flooding our American markets with cheaply produced goods. I do not want my views regarding this question to be misunderstood. I do not believe or desire that this country can retire into its shell and refuse to trade with other nations.
