Session #84 · 1955–57

Speech #840163566

Many people have criticized turning over some of this property to UNRRA which. of course. pays for it out of their appropriation. This refers particularly to farm equipment and transportation equipment. It is time for us to realize that the American farmer today is producing a lot more foodstuff and a lot more fiber than the market will absorb ordinarily and when the European and Asiatic countries get back into the full production of food and fiber. if we keep on increasing the production by our American farmers over and above the normal consumption of the American market and what we export in normal times. we will find that our agricultural economy in 3 or 4 years will be almost bankrupt. Mr. Speaker. we have been holding hearings on further changes that may be necessary so far as disposal of surplus property is concerned.
