Speech #840148179

New Hampshire and New Jersey. in Georgia and New York. No wonder. then. Lord Mountjoy. at the end of the War of Independence. standing up in parliament to explain the cause of Englands defeat. epitomized it in these unforgettable and incontrovertible words: "America was lost by Irish immigrants." Later. driven from their native land by the horrors of the famine. came their descendants in ever increasing numbers seeking only that opportunity and freedom which had been denied them in the land of their birth. And so. in this city. the old North Church wplich had blinked out the message of Revere. himself the offspring of French Huguenots. looked down as it does today upon the crowded streets of the old North End. upon these new pilgrims of freedom. who were Americans before they landed and who brought with theim their fierce love of liberty and unswerving fealty and devotion to the ancient and enduring faith. The Puritan city in which they found themselves was the capital of what was originally a theocratic State.
