Despite great efforts by the Italian Government. with some assistance from the United States. over 10 percent of the population is unemployed. There are -beautiful shops and apartments in Rome. but in southern Italy a man considers himself lucky if he can earn $150 a year. Emigration is the only answer. The United States. traditional friend of Italy. and indebted to her for a great religious and democratic and cultural heritage. must open her arms to friends in need. We must work for a more liberal and humane immigration law. That will permit more Italians to come to the United States today to strengthen our American society of tomorrow.
