Session #84 · 1955–57

Speech #840103399

It is well that we remember that the American colonists. beginning with early Virginia. were settled under royal charters. granted by the Kings of England. You will also recall that these charters almost always contained very strict and extremely burdensome reservations in favor of the English Crown. They did not fail to enumerate limitations and restrictions upon the exercise of civil and political liberties which must be strictly observed by these early emigrants from England. These colonists did not acquire civil and political liberties as they were then known in England. In fact. as early as 1612 the Virginia colonists protested to the English Crown. against the deprivation of these rights.
