Session #84 · 1955–57

Speech #840096867

It will renew the faith of people. if that is at all necessary. because it will show to the world that even in the rush of the final hours of a session of Congress. we can and will take the time to be of human service. I cannot close these comments. Mr. Speaker. without pointing out to my colleagues here and the Nation as a whole. that this trying situation came about as the result of a provision in the Nationality Act of 1940. It was my privilege. Mr. Speaker. as a Member of the 82d Congress in 1952. to vote for the McCarranWalter Act and to also vote to override a Presidential veto so that this legislation could be enacted into law. It is under the provisions of this McCarranWalter Immigration Act. Mr. Speaker. that this corrective action is possible here today.
