I include for the RECORD an article by Daniel L. Schorr in the Christian Science Monitor on July 6. The refugee problem is brought into sharp focus here and deserves the attention of every Member of this body. There is no need to belabor the point that our refugee relief program needs drastic overhauling and revising. For that reason. I. along with other Members of the Congress. have sought these changes. The problems of broken families separated by our strict. unrealistic and unyielding immigration laws is an everyday occurence in my district. It is. therefore. easy to understand why I. or any other elected Representative from that great constituency. take to heart the human misery and loneliness A5026 of the worlds refugees. As a leader in the free worlds struggle for universal expression of the principles of humanitarianism and freedom. we. as Americans. owe it to our heritage and our conscience to extend a helping hand to those who have been expelled by the horrors of war and the threats of totalitarianism.
