Session #84 · 1955–57

Speech #840076815

I include as part of my remarks the following article by E. F. Tompkins: IMMIGRATION FACTS: CoNGREss HAS THEM (By E. F. Tompkins) Senator KENNEDY of Massachusetts. asks Congress for a bipartisan commission to investigate the McCarranWalter Immigration Act. This would seem to be a needless and hazardous venture. It seems needless because the McCarranWalter Act is less than 3 years old. and was itself the product of a long and painstaking study. The act was written with the aid and advice of immigration experts. It was passed with the approval of the Labor Department. the State Department. and the Justice Department. overwhelmingly surviving a Presidential veto. The act ranks among the most carefully constructed laws on the Federal statute books.
