Session #84 · 1955–57

Speech #840053951

Here again I have found myself in agreement with the late Senator Taft. In 1953. a month before he died. Senator Taft. who was a close student of Near Eastern problems. declared: It is not our desire to stimulate an arms race. Money so spent could be far better used in resettling refugees. building schools. and developing land resources. Senator Taft felt that arms should not be sent into the area. to either the Arab States or Israel. until peace within the =region was achieved. and he said: It is my belief that with skill and determination. peace may be established and an effective antiCommunist front developed through progressive economic cooperation. Unfortunately.
