It may be that with our ascendancy to world power it may become necessary to discard an old pattern and to fix a new pattern. But let us not deceive ourselves as to the significance and the substance of what we are doing. I come from a generation when the stream of a new and rich immigration was fleeing from the compulsory military service of Europe to find in our land the opportunity to participate in the pursuit of happiness in a climate of peaceful intentions. Many of that period came to our shores from Germany. Much as they loved the land of their birth. and the associations with dear friends with whom they had been reared. their desire to live normal lives in a climate of peace led to the severance of old ties and the joining of their lots with our lot.
