Session #84 · 1955–57

Speech #840038800

In addition. we in America must strive incessantly for programs and policies by our own Government which will clearly indicate the desire of the American people to aid the freedomloving people of Poland. We must strengthen and give substance to the Voice of America through which we can reach behind the Iron Curtain. We should work unceasingly to bring about a revision of our basic immigration and refugee laws in order that the United States may perform its historic role of providing a haven for a fair number of the refugees and escapees from tyranny. Our present restrictive immigration and refugee laws. and the harsh administration of these laws. prevent many deserving Polish refugees from coming to the United States where they might begin life anew. The Senate of the United States should ratify the Genocide Convention. This would be an action of great significance. and would symbolize our intention that the murder of the tens of thousands of Polish martyrs has not been forgotten.
