Session #84 · 1955–57

Speech #840034775

Today the Republic of Israel celebrates the seventh anniversary of its independence. I wish to express my congratulations to that gallant little state that has come so far in so short a time. When we stop to consider the great odds against them. we are forced to admire the unflagging courage and determination with which the 20th century pioneers of Israel have tackled their problems. Perhaps the most difficult task for the young nation was the absorption of the refugees. In 1948 Israel flung wide its doors. Displaced Jews from Europe. many of them penniless and broken by years of Nazi oppression. were given sanctuary.
