Somehow we must work for a full twoway cultural exchange to strengthen American unity. The heroes and symbols dear to our fellow citizens from the middle zone of Europe must not be kept standing on the shore of our onsweeping cultural stream. To change the metaphor. they must not be kept waiting outside the door of our national Pantheon. like spiritual DPs. hoping. hat in hand. as it were. for some entrance visa that never is granted by our educational leaders. What great things this full impenetration may accomplish for our general American culture we can scarcely imagine. It is not too much to predict that it may even be the means at last of fertilizing our New World Renaissance.
