In October 1923. 9 months after the SunJoffe declaration. the Comintern sent to China a man who was to play a leading role in Chinese politics in the next 4 years. He was known the world over as Michael Borodin. but this was not his real name. He had. before the Russian revolution. lived in the United States and attended Valparaiso University in Indiana. It is not known whether he had ever become an American citizen. For a time he conducted a school for Russian immigrant children in Chicago. He went back to Russia during the revolution and later served as a Comintern agent in Turkey. He had already shown great talent as a conspirator and organizer.
