Session #84 · 1955–57

Speech #840008657

But in a pattern that was to become all too familiar they unscrupulously broke their word. invaded the country. and incorporated it into the Soviet Union as the 14th Soviet Republic. A short period of German rule then ensued. and then the Russians returned in 1944. Since that time the Soviets have confiscated private property. they have persecuted religion. they have deported thousands of Lithuanians to Siberia. and killed thousands more. But they have not broken the spirit of the Lithuanian people. nor their desire for freedom and independence. The people of Lithuania look with hope. and we join them in that hope. that the day will come when Lithuania will once again be free. and resume her rightful place among the nations of the world.
