The jurist smiled when he thought back on his youthful entry into public office. "When I was first considered for the office. a few weeks before the actual appointment. I was only 23. and there was some doubt because of my youth. But at the same time a couple of other young men were appointed in the United States District Attorneys office and I turned 24 in the meantime. so everything was all right." The only son of immigrant Italian parents. he worked diligently in the district attorneys office under Dodd and two other district attorneys who reappointed him. He had been admitted to the bar in the second judicial district on April 1. 1928. and had been graduated from Columbia Law School in 1927. His earlier education bad been at Public School 123.
