Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830221166

I want to point out that much of the language in the bill now under consideration was taken by committee amendment from a similar bill introduced by the able and distinguished chairman of our House Judiciary Committee. the Honorable CHAUNcEY REED of Illinois. H. R. 7130. before us. proposes to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to provide for the loss of nationality of persons convicted of certain crimes involving conspiracy to commit treasonable acts against the United States. There has been much confusion and misunderstanding in the news accounts and discussions of this matter. Much of the difficulty is caused by thinking and talking in terms of citizenship. instead of nationality.
