Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830221163

Mr. Speaker. the bill H. R. 7265. which I introduced. amends paragraph 9 of section 349 (a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act to provide for the loss of nationality by any citizen convicted of violating certain specified sections of title 18 of the United States Code. At the present time paragraph 9 of section 349 (a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act provides that any citizen loses his nationality if he is convicted of committing any act of treason against or attempting to overthrow or bearing arms against the United States. In his address to the Congress on the state of the Union. the President recommended the enactment of legislation to provide for the loss of nationality after a citizen has been convicted of conspiring to advocate the overthrow of this Government by force or violence. I am heartily In accord with that recommendation. and have so provided in my bill.
