Speech #830216148

We could prove. and we have been trying to. that capitalism as we practice it has produced the highest standard of living that the world has ever known. but let us not sell it short. Capitalism has given dignity to a human being. In it. an emigrant or a youth. who wants to prove his mettle. can start a business. build it up. express the thrilling aspects of energy and Initiative. and if there is a mind to do it. there comes a companionship between the boss and the laborer. and in many places profitsharing. stockholding employees help make the business stronger. And besides. there have been the benef1cent gifts of capitalism. Think of the universities. the colleges. the churches. the schools. the hospitals. the parks. and museums. the foundation funds of the Fords. the Rockefellers. and the benevolence of many with less capital.
