I am not suggesting a moral flabbiness which tries to escape the responsibilities of decision and of judgment. but rather for a depth of compassion and of understanding. There is a vast amount of bitterness and of hate which simply corrode the individual. There is grave danger that under the impact of mass suffering we become impervious to human need. We read of millions dying from starvation. of deportation of entire populations. of the homeless and of those in refugee or prison camps. and then we turn perhaps to the sporting page. It is impossible to visualize such a vast amount of pain. Yet it is vitally important that we feel each one of us something of the burden of the tragedy of today.
