When the Nation was threatened with severance in 1861. they responded to Lincolns call and one of the most famous of all the Union Armys regiments was the Garibaldi Volunteers. In this desperate war. four men of Italian background attained the rank of general in the Union forces. In the latter part of the 19th century. and the early part of the 20th century. * the United States saw a vast wave of Italian immigration. These vibrant people gave a new life and impetus to our country. They brought their artistic. scientific. and cultural backgrounds with them. They made the life stream of America richer and stronger. These immigrants. while contributing much. nevertheless instantly embraced the American way of life and shouldered the duties and responsibilities of United States citizenship. Spreading out as they did from coast to coast. border to border. they became active participants in the evermoving American scene. Civic. fraternal. philanthropic. and religious movements gathered greater momentum from the contributions made by these new. young. vigorous. libertyloving people.
