Session #83 · 1953–55

Speech #830193195

It is most appropriate that the people of a community observe so memorable an anniversary. Pride in things past and pleasurable anticipation of things to come. pride in ones hometown and its achievementsare qualities which must never leave our American scene. It is particularly appropriate that I refer to Watertowns centennial on this the 17th of June. because it was to this fine community that a great friend of freedom emigrated in the year 1856. He was a German who wrote himself as large into American history as did almost any other American of foreign ancestry. He was a German who hated slavery and fought slavery.
