Several nationalities were dominant in the flood of immigrants who brought their families and cultures to settle and prosper in the fertile western plains. German people set up a colony at Columbus in 1856. and in the next year farther west at Grand Island. Norfolk had its beginnings about 10 years later. in 1866.
