Estonia. and Lithuania in 1940. Recently the policy of "Sovietization." somewhat relaxed in 1953. has been revived with ruthless vigor. Underground channels have reported another mass deportation within the past year. Attempts are being made to wipe out all trace of the Baltic peoples as national and cultural entities and to completely mechanize the human lives involved. In spite of this. news from the Baltic indicates that the resistance movement is still alive. The story of the Baltic countries since World War II is a tragic indictment of the forces of communism. Abundant evidence presented to the House Baltic Committee is such that the United States could never- be reconciled to Soviet occupation of Latvia.
